(The Beau Monde Magazine): What inspired you to pursue a career in filmmaking, and how has your journey shaped the Emirati film industry?
(Nayla): Growing up, I was always fascinated by the power of storytelling and the way films could transport audiences to entirely new worlds. However, in the UAE, filmmaking wasn’t seen as a conventional path, especially for women. This challenge inspired me even more—it became my mission to tell authentic stories from our region and show that Emirati voices have a place on the global stage. My journey has been about more than just making films; it’s been about building a foundation for a growing industry in the UAE. With every project, I’ve worked to inspire others and prove that we can create stories that resonate both locally and internationally. Whether through collaborating with incredible talent, mentoring young filmmakers, or pushing boundaries with bold narratives, I’ve sought to contribute to a legacy that encourages creativity and cultural pride.
As the first female filmmaker in the UAE, what challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
As the first female filmmaker in the UAE, I faced significant cultural and practical challenges. Filmmaking was not seen as a traditional career path, especially for women, and there was skepticism about my ability to succeed in a male-dominated industry. Additionally, the lack of infrastructure and support for independent filmmakers meant I had to build networks and learn through trial and error. I overcame these obstacles with determination, passion, and by surrounding myself with people who believed in my vision. These challenges shaped me and fueled my drive to pave the way for future filmmakers, especially women, in the UAE.
How do you balance showcasing Emirati culture while appealing to a global audience in your films?
Balancing Emirati culture with global appeal starts with telling authentic, heartfelt stories. I focus on themes that are deeply rooted in our traditions and heritage while exploring universal emotions like love, loss, and resilience—elements that resonate with audiences everywhere. By weaving in cultural nuances, such as our rituals, landscapes, and values, I create a sense of authenticity that invites viewers to experience Emirati culture. At the same time, I ensure the storytelling remains relatable and emotionally engaging, which helps bridge cultural gaps.

Could you walk us through your creative process, from concept development to final production?
My creative process begins with finding a story that truly resonates with me—something emotionally compelling and meaningful. I spend a lot of time exploring themes, characters, and cultural nuances that align with my vision. Once I have a clear concept, I move into research, diving deep into the subject matter to ensure authenticity and depth. During development, I collaborate with writers and other creatives to refine the script, shaping the narrative while keeping the cultural and emotional integrity intact. Pre-production is where the groundwork is laid—assembling the right team, scouting locations, and meticulously planning every aspect of the shoot. On set, my focus shifts to bringing the vision to life. I work closely with the cast and crew, creating a collaborative atmosphere where everyone can contribute their best. It’s all about capturing raw, genuine performances and stunning visuals that align with the story’s essence. Post-production is where the magic comes together—editing, sound design, and music bring the story to life. At this stage, every detail is fine-tuned to ensure the final film reflects the original vision while engaging the audience emotionally and visually.
How has the UAE’s film industry evolved since you started, and what role do you see yourself playing in its future?
The UAE’s film industry has evolved remarkably since I began. What started as a largely undeveloped space has grown into a thriving hub with government support, international collaborations, and platforms showcasing Emirati talent globally. There’s now a stronger focus on storytelling, with filmmakers exploring diverse narratives that reflect our culture and resonate worldwide. As a pioneer, I see my role as both a filmmaker and an advocate for the industry’s growth. I aim to continue telling authentic Emirati stories while mentoring and empowering the next generation of filmmakers. My vision is to contribute to a sustainable and vibrant film industry that elevates our voices on the global stage.
What advice would you give to aspiring female filmmakers in the UAE and the wider region?
To aspiring female filmmakers in the UAE and the wider region, my advice is simple: believe in your voice and your vision. The road may not always be easy, but resilience and passion will carry you through. Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, and never shy away from telling stories that matter to you. Build a strong network of collaborators who share your values and support your journey. Learn every aspect of filmmaking—knowledge is power, and understanding the craft will give you confidence. Most importantly, stay authentic to your identity and culture, as your unique perspective is what makes your voice valuable in global cinema. The industry needs more diverse voices, and there’s no better time than now to step into the spotlight. Keep pushing boundaries and paving the way for others to follow.

How would you describe your filmmaking style, and what elements make your work uniquely yours?
My filmmaking style is deeply rooted in authenticity and emotional resonance. I strive to tell stories that are visually compelling and culturally rich, blending traditional Emirati elements with universal themes. I’m drawn to narratives that explore human connections, identity, and resilience, often with a focus on strong, multidimensional characters. What makes my work uniquely mine is the way I weave Emirati heritage into the storytelling—whether through cultural rituals, landscapes, or subtle details that reflect our traditions. At the same time, I aim for a cinematic style that resonates globally, combining evocative visuals, layered storytelling, and a sense of intimacy that draws the audience in.
Can you share any details about upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?
I am incredibly excited about my upcoming feature film, BAAB, which is a deeply personal and visually rich project. It’s a small indie fantasy horror rooted in Emirati culture, blending traditional elements with universal themes of loss, resilience, and identity. Collaborating with A.R. Rahman, who is composing the score with an all-female orchestra, adds a unique and empowering dimension to the film. The story has a deeply emotional core, and I can’t wait to share it with both local and global audiences.
How do you approach the representation of women and underrepresented voices in your films?
Representation of women and underrepresented voices is at the heart of my filmmaking. I approach it with a sense of responsibility and authenticity, striving to tell stories that reflect the complexities, strengths, and vulnerabilities of these voices. Women, especially, are often portrayed through narrow lenses in cinema, and my goal is to break away from those stereotypes by creating multidimensional characters with depth, agency, and reliability. I ensure that the narratives I choose highlight the diversity of experiences, focusing on perspectives that are often overlooked. Whether it’s exploring themes of resilience, identity, or societal expectations, I aim to tell stories that empower and inspire. Behind the camera, I actively seek to collaborate with diverse talents and promote inclusivity on my sets. It’s not just about representation on screen, but about fostering an industry that supports and uplifts underrepresented voices at every level. Through my work, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive cinematic landscape.
Looking back on your career, what legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of filmmakers in the UAE?
Looking back on my career, I hope to leave a legacy of possibility and inspiration for future generations of filmmakers in the UAE. I want to show that it’s possible to tell authentic Emirati stories that resonate globally while staying true to our cultural roots. My journey has been about breaking barriers, pushing boundaries, and paving the way for others to follow. I aspire to create a foundation where filmmaking in the UAE thrives, a space where young, diverse voices are nurtured, supported, and celebrated. Beyond my own films, I hope my efforts in mentoring, advocating for inclusivity, and building platforms will empower others to pursue their creative visions confidently. I want to be remembered as someone who not only told meaningful stories but also contributed to shaping an industry where Emirati cinema stands proudly on the global stage, inspiring generations to come.
