“My journey has been a long and fulfilling one, filled with passion, challenges, and immense growth,” Manish reflects. “It all started with my childhood obsession with films. Growing up in Bombay, I was captivated by the magic of cinema; how every little detail, from the clothes to the sets, told a story. That fascination planted the seeds of my love for fashion and design.”
Even as a child, he displayed a keen eye for fashion. “I remember commenting on what my teachers wore, much to their surprise! But it was more than just clothes; it was about how fashion could express emotion, character, and mood.” His journey into the industry began with costume design, with a significant breakthrough when he styled Juhi Chawla for the film Swarg. “That was a turning point that opened doors I never dreamed possible. Of course, the journey wasn’t without its challenges, but I’ve always believed in moving forward with a positive mindset. I truly believe fashion is about evolving, just like life. Over the years, I’ve transitioned from costume design to couture, high jewellery, and now, filmmaking. Each phase of my career has been a learning experience, teaching me the importance of creativity, adaptability, and staying true to my vision,” – Manish shares.
Manish Malhotra was a game-changer from the very beginning, pioneering the idea that costume designers should have access to character scripts. “When I began my journey in film, costume designers were often sidelined. Producers focused solely on making actresses look glamorous, rather than considering how their characters should appear. But I approached it differently,” he explains. “The turning point came in 1994 when, after multiple requests, I was finally handed a script—something unheard of at the time. What has now become standard practice was something I pioneered.”
This storytelling approach continues to define his work. “For me, it’s never just about creating beautiful clothes, it’s about bringing a character to life through their wardrobe. Balancing tradition with contemporary trends is an ongoing conversation in my work.”

Over the years, Manish’s designs have become synonymous with intricate embroidery, luxurious fabrics, and opulence. “My signature style is undeniably glamour. For me, it’s about bringing craftsmanship into the modern world with a sense of opulence and grandeur. Glamour, for me, isn’t just about embellishments. It is about how tradition meets the contemporary in the most seamless, sophisticated way, ” he says.
His passion lies in preserving India’s rich textile heritage while infusing a modern sensibility. “A Banarasi lehenga, steeped in history, can be just as glamorous with its regal silk and intricate zari work. A traditional sari paired with a corset blouse, edged with delicate sequins or pearls, transforms into something striking yet feminine.”
By elevating crafts such as chikankari from Mijwan, Banarasi weaves, and Kashmiri threadwork into couture, Malhotra redefines heritage with contemporary allure. “That is what glamour is to me—heritage redefined.”

Bollywood has been instrumental in Manish’s journey, and the grandeur of cinema naturally reflects in his designs. “Bollywood has always been a part of my work DNA, and that cinematic grandeur translates into my collections. But for me, it’s about striking the right balance—blending drama with elegance that feels effortless in real life. Whether it’s intricate embroidery, structured silhouettes, or statement jewellery, every piece has to have that aspirational quality while still being wearable. I’m driven by the idea of crafting something that makes an immediate impact, whether on a film set or at a wedding, but also stands the test of time, transcending trends and moments. It’s about creating pieces that feel just as relevant tomorrow as they do today.“
His creations have adorned countless stars, from Priyanka Chopra to Kim Kardashian. “Every project and every client holds a special place in my heart. Working with celebrities like Priyanka, Kim, Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, or Rihanna has been an exciting challenge. Each brings their unique energy, personality, and style. Manish Malhotra’s debut at Dubai Fashion Week this February marks another milestone. “Dubai is a dynamic blend of cultures, where heritage and modernity coexist beautifully. The city’s fashion landscape is bold, sophisticated, and constantly evolving, making it the perfect place to showcase The World Collection: Dubai.”
The collection celebrates the grandeur and elegance of Dubai, infused with a contemporary global sensibility. “Arab women have long been at the forefront of luxury fashion, with their deep appreciation for craftsmanship and couture. I wanted to celebrate that through structured tailoring, fluid silhouettes, rich embellishments, and timeless glamour with a fresh perspective.”
For Manish, Dubai holds special significance. “It’s where I launched my first international flagship store, and celebrating its first anniversary alongside my debut at Dubai Fashion Week makes this moment even more meaningful. The city has embraced me so warmly, and this collection is my way of honouring that connection. It’s a dialogue between cultures, a nod to the Middle East’s influence on couture, and a reflection of my creative evolution.”
