NYFW: New Realities and Global Influence

New York Fashion Week has traditionally opened the fashion season, setting the tone for the industry. This year, it took place in a somewhat different format but still delivered standout moments, new names, and global influences. Despite the absence of some key brands, the event demonstrated that American fashion remains dynamic, open to experimentation, and increasingly collaborative with designers from around the world.

Who Stood Out on the Runway?

• One of the most anticipated shows of the season was Calvin Klein’s return to the runway. This marked the brand’s first show since 2018, and designer Veronica Leoni introduced a collection centered on sophisticated yet refined businesswear, featuring fluid silk, structured silhouettes, and classic minimalism.

Marc Jacobs brought theatricality to the week, presenting doll-like silhouettes with exaggerated proportions and sculptural detailing.

Christian Siriano took inspiration from automotive design, with sleek, geometric gowns featuring metallic accents, emphasizing movement and modern elegance.

Eckhaus Latta showcased a relaxed yet stylish take on contemporary fashion, incorporating leather bombers, cargo pants, and asymmetrical dresses. Their collection balanced functionality with individuality, proving that wearable fashion can still make a statement.

• One of the most talked-about shows was Elena Velez’s collection, inspired by myths of sirens and sailors. Her models appeared on the runway in netted, leather, and ruffled garments, creating an almost underwater fantasy effect.

Several well-known brands opted out of this season’s schedule. Proenza Schouler, Area, and Helmut Lang were absent due to creative director transitions, while Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren chose to focus on alternative presentation formats. Interestingly, some American designers showcased their collections outside of New York. Willy Chavarria presented his latest line at Paris Men’s Fashion Week, while Bode debuted its collection in New Orleans, merging fashion with sports culture at the GQ Bowl. This shift reflects a growing trend where designers explore new ways to engage with audiences, expanding the reach of American fashion beyond its traditional home.

International Influence: Who Arrived in New York?

While some American brands opted for different platforms, New York remained a key destination for international designers. This season highlighted several standout global names:

• Sabyasachi (India) – showcased a luxurious collection, further cementing its status in the global luxury market.

• Jason Wu (Taiwan) – drew inspiration from Eastern calligraphy, translating its principles into his designs.

• Peter Do (Vietnam) – presented his first collection for Helmut Lang, a defining moment for the brand’s future.
